5 Hot Tips for Picking Paint Colors

Follow these tips when picking paint colors video post...

I see so many paint color mistakes these days, so I thought I would showcase a few hot tips for picking paint colors with some gorgeous before and after photos by my wonderful sister's design company, Pacific Home Design.  There are other color considerations to consider but these 5 with photo examples are a great start!

Let's be honest... picking the right paint colors is tricky!  Here's the quick breakdown of my hot tips but to get the most of out of this post, watch the short video above.

  • Always Work with the STYLE of the Home: I say this over and over again in my Certified Color Expert Course, we don't make color choices in a vacuum. The home is usually telling us what direction it needs to go. You're looking at this home, what color do you think it needs to go?

BEFORE

If you said that this farmhouse style home should be white...then you are right!  This home seller spent almost 6-figures on paint and staging but the resell value went up 3-fold!

That was a fairly easy and obvious one but you would not believe how many times you see a specific style of home not using the correct paint colors!

  • NEVER Underestimate the Transformational Power of Paint Alone: Looking at this kitchen below if you're a stager, you may be wondering...where do I even begin?!  First instinct would be to gut it but the seller would not be getting their return on investment doing that.

The oven and flooring is prehistoric, so a lot of the budget would go to just that necessity for this relatively inexpensive cottage.  New oven, jewelry and slap some fun paint colors in the kitchen and you've transformed it completely!

New paint literally breathed new life into this space and makes it ten times more desirable for buyers!

  • Curb Appeal Matters Especially in Staging and Paint: According to Zillow reports, simply having different color front doors makes a difference in price point, so it makes sense to spruce up this beach cottage curb appeal...

The home is usually telling us what direction it needs to go. You're looking at this kitchen's flooring, what color do you think it needs to go?

The orange flooring and cabinets are just too much!

A popular green paint color for the bottom cabinets works not only with the style but also the helps to tone down the flooring.  White cabinets on top (which is the preferred, trending cabinet color for uppers according to HOUZZ) completes the look.

  • Don't Be Afraid to Make Paint Changes to Fixtured Finishes: We're always so afraid to paint that wood paneling or that red brick fireplace. But I'm here to tell you, it most often looks so much better when you do! Before you make those critical decisions yourself, make sure to get the advice of a Certified Professional Stager and Designer before you do it.
