5 Things Your Color Consultations Should Include

Plus Some Mistakes You Could Be Making...

I just wrapped up a color workshop that over 1500 people attended and was surprised at how very few people had a set structure for their color consultations!  We have just added a HUGE bonus to our Certified Color Expert course that now includes a Canva template for a Paint Selections Guide.

This critical color consultations guide is designed to be sent to the client post-consult and is filled with invaluable advice along with the paint color selections and finishes chosen during the consultation.  We can all agree that client's have a higher expectation these days, so sending a detailed report for color consultations that takes 10-minutes to compile is the least we can do and a competitive differentiator in our business.

Watch the Video Below to See Details of the Paint Selections Guide for Color Consultations

Here Are 5 Things Your Color Consultations Should Include and Could Be Missing...

After creating that Paint Selections Guide I realized it would be helpful to outline the elements that make for a successful color consultation since there's very little training on that kind of design service.   I also asked my members to share some of their dramatic color transformations, so I thought it would be fun to mix those in with my advice...

  • Write Down the Details of Your Paint Selections with Specific Finishes and Tell Them Exactly Where You Want the Paint to Go - Don't assume your client listened well and recap with the full details of each paint color and which room and wall it should go on. Finishes can be confusing to clients, so it's critical to spell it all out in writing so that they get the details correct!

  • Provide a Few Ideal Paint Color Choices for the Client to Test Instead of Just One - Once you've narrowed down the most ideal paint color choices for the client, it's always best to let them make the final decision and provide them options.  Color is still subjected, so any choice will work but allowing a client to have final say is always best.

  • Provide Detailed Paint Tips for the DIY - A shocking amount of your clients will try and save money on the painter and paint for themselves so include detailed advice on best practices for painting along with favorite tools to use.

  • Provide Detailed Advice on How to TEST the Paint Colors - A good color consultant does not just specify one paint color option but provides a few ideal choices (see above), so it's imperative that the client tests out these choices in various lighting in order to narrow down to their favorite choice.  Don't let client's skip this step and give them the tools (ideally large samples) to do the testing once you've gone.

  • Include Design Advice and Upsell Design Services - Specifying the right paint color for clients is not just about paint but always includes the elements in the space... some of which may become a conflict.  It's always good to include lots of good design advice inside the color consultation along with the option of adding a full design plan.  Most my Certified Color Consultants tell me they usually get lots of design work from a single Color Consultation because color is not just about paint and people choose who they know, like and trust.

I hope these tips are helpful and while some may seem obvious... very few color consultants are providing them in writing.
